In a historical offensive season, teams and players find their way to the basket at a fantastic pace. Some of the best offensive teams of all time are coming out of this year, and teams are allowing more points than ever.
In a year full of surprises and success, Jayson Tatum may shine the brightest. Having career stats in almost every category, he leads one of the best teams in the league and continues to defy the odds. Despite head coaching changes and team injuries, he has given the Celtics hope and deserves to be the MVP.
What He Has Done
Tatum is proving to the world that he is one of the best players in the NBA with an astonishing stat line. He is averaging 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. His marks are up 4 points and 2% from the field, remaining consistent in most other stats.
The Celtics as a whole are incredible, sitting at No. 1 or No. 2 in most NBA power rankings, with quite possibly the best offense in the league. They rank second in points per game as a team with 118.5 and first in offensive rating with 117.8. They are also top 10 in three-point percentage as a team at almost 37%. Tatum’s personal success paired with the team’s success should put him at No. 1 in the MVP race.
His three biggest competitors happen to be the three best international players in the NBA, with Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. All three of these players dominate the court and have their own genuine cases.
Antetokounmpo is the easiest case to beat, with his team benign a full 5 games behind Boston. His stats are good, with the number of his points just slightly below Tatum’s while his rebounding stats and assists are superior. However, he is the complete and full No. 1 option with no contest, and Tatum is putting up these stats with a co-star putting up 27 points per game in Jaylen Brown.
This is the case for all of the players ahead of him. Although the stats are similar between players, Tatum still manages to put up elite stats with someone else taking up a high quantity of offensive possessions. Jokic and Doncic are both almost averaging a triple-double, but their teams are not only less competitive than Tatum’s, but the ball is in their hands a lot more.
Tatum has some of the best offensive stats in the game as a player and as a team. However, despite his competition putting up elite numbers and finding season success, they will ultimately fall short in the race due to their team’s shortcomings and their own inconsistency. Tatum is not only one of the best-scoring talents in the league, but he does so with a well-rounded team that is the favorite to win the championship.
