Patriots Beat the Eagles for 2-0 Preseason Start

Patriots beat the Eagles is an understatement, more like dismantle. The Patriots came out of the gates in Week 3 of the preseason firing on all cylinders. They were able to put away the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 35-0.

New England’s offense rolled all night. From Cam Newton to Mac Jones, they were able to move the ball through the air and on the ground with ease.

Let’s not forget the fat zero on the other side of the scoreboard though. We didn’t get to see what they could do against Jalen Hurts because he was out with a stomach illness, but they completely scorched the offense they did see.

The Eagles moved to 0-2 on the preseason, the Patriots went to 2-0. While we don’t want to get too excited, it may be time to check sportsbooks’ Patriots win total and percentage to make the playoffs odds. Just an early thought.

True Competition

The press conferences we’ve seen so far in the preseason have been kind of as you’d expect. Belichick naming Cam the early starter and Cam saying he has no idea, he’s just going to play.

Mac Jones says he doesn’t care, he is here to learn and grow. And Cam has been all about helping the young quarterback start his journey.

Last night really sparked up the competition. Both quarterbacks were outstanding. Newton completed 8/9 passes for 103 yards, a touchdown, and a nearly perfect passer rating.

Newton was calm in the pocket all night and made great throws. He looks like he wants the job.

Jones came out and looked just as good. He went 13/19 for 146 yards. Neither QB turned the ball over.

The rushing attack was also firing on all cylinders. Whether it was Sony Michel, J.J. Taylor, or Rhamondre Stevenson, the ball was moving down the field.

Stevenson scored twice and Taylor led all backs in yards and yards per carry. He put a TD on the board as well. Michel had 34 yards on the ground and 37 yards through the air.

Patriots Beat the Eagles  Pats D Smothered the Eagles

The defense came out and made a statement in this game. Jalen Hurts or not, they were tenacious.

They were able to grab 2 interceptions and had 4 sacks. Not to mention the goose egg they forced. If the defense is going to be this good all season, look out AFC East.

Joe Flacco and Nick Mullens combined for 110 yards and each threw a pick. They aren’t exactly Josh Allen, but it’s a confidence builder no less.

Chase Winovich finished the game with 5 tackles and 2 sacks. Harvey Langi had 5 tackles, 1 sack, and an interception. Adrian Colbert had the other pick.

On to New York

So, the Patriots beat the Eagles. What does that mean for 2021? 2-0 is a nice start, but now it’s on to New York to square off against the Giants in the final preseason battle.

If last night’s victory did anything, it made me want to see more of Cam vs Mac for the starting position. Regardless of what happens in the preseason, Cam likely starts the season under center, but it will be nice to know exactly what you have in the tank.

If Cam gets in a bind or injured this season, Mac Jones may take the reigns and not look back. We will see how he does next week, but he looked poised enough for his hot streak to continue.

If the D continues giving the Pats leads like they had against the Eagles, it may not matter who is under center. We’ve seen what Bill Belichick can do with a talented defense before.

With the regular season right around the corner, we’re ready to get this final preseason game out of the way and get started. Let’s take care of the Giants and then…on to Miami.
